I am not here to tell you about how we do this and how we do that like every other mattress retailer. Lets just talk about what I have seen, heard and the facts about the two. One of the reasons I built my website is to let people shop confidently and securely, more importantly without being annoyed by some pushy salesman. Have you ever bought something at a price lower then the company down the street because you shopped your product well? Feels pretty good huh? And then there are times when we were shoved into something by a salesman we really didn’t want to buy from (a used car maybe?) only to get home “mad” and really wanting to go back and punch the salesman in the face. But we don’t - we suck it up and promise ourselves we will never do it again. The internet has given us “the conscientious shopper” a place to shop - from the comfort of home and every year the amount of internet shoppers increases...
So how about some information about the retail mattress industry?
I have had a lot of customers ask me how do I sell these for such a low price and the retail stores sell them for a lot more? Do you ever ask yourself why some retail mattress stores have 10, 20 even 30 locations? And every time you walk in, you and the salesman are the only ones in there? How do they have so many locations and no one is ever in them? Hmmm…Two words – Mark-ups. The price some stores get for a mattress will knock your socks off... The mattress industry is quietly lucrative, yes they make good money and no one really pays attention to it What's more, is they can say whatever they want because consumers don’t shop for mattresses every week so their ambiguity is easy prey. You ever notice most chain retail locations don’t allow you to buy online? Hmmm… Because then they would be competing with me and would have to cut their prices in half – why would you buy an 8 inch mattress for 1599.99 when you can get it from me for half that? How about this - have you ever called one of the chains and asked about a price on a particular mattress only to have them respond with “we can’t quote a price over the phone, you need to come in? Hmmm… They would rather you get “worked over” - Ooops - I mean “come over” to their store and feel how great it is…Many mattress stores buy from the same manufacture as we internet sellers do and place their name on it and even go as far as saying they manufactured it. One annoying commercial in
And what brand is it that I sell? First let’s go back and look at the trade laws enacted in the 1970’s that prohibited manufacturers from setting a price floor. A price floor is a minimum selling price. The reason for a price floor set by a manufacturer is to keep profits high for their resellers, which helps keep profits high for the manufacturer, with the new law, many discount mattress retailers opened up and undercut the big department stores... Naturally, the department stores were not happy about this so they started to negotiate with the manufacturers. The outcome of this was for the manufacturers to provide "exclusive" models to the department stores, to set them aside form the discount retailers. (This is where the name game began) These "exclusivity" deals eventually spread and have led to the very unique situation we have today wear just about every retailer sells exclusive models, completely snuffing the ability for a consumer to comparison shop.
That was then and this is now - another new breed has opened up - the internet retailer - to undercut the retail mattress stores. We (the internet retailers) will always have better pricing because we have less overhead...
Let’s talk about the beds I buy and when I say buy that’s what I mean. Eighty percent of the retail mattress stores in your neighborhood buy wholesale and sell retail. (Very few retail stores manufacture mattresses themselves) That’s how the industry works…Every now and then some new wholsale broker salesman calls and asks if I want to sell their bed. I tell them - bring it buy, and 9 times out of 10 it sucks. It’s a lower density, made inferior and it feels like “Funky Foam” you see this in big discount stores like Costco, or Wall Mart. The funky foam is lower density, is sometimes soft, sometimes hard, and corrects very slowly - which means you it will wake you up if you change positions and in the long run, it won’t hold up, eventually turning into a wonderful summer hammock... If I wanted to sell crappy mattresses I would have called my website crappy wholesale beds. Instead, I chose the opposite - Classy name, Classy bed. I have been in this industry for long enough to know the wholesale side and have seen it all, which means I know who has what and how much they paid for it. But more importantly, I know where to get the best of the best and that’s what I buy.
How about Tempur-pedic®? The only reason I compare is because you cannot feel our mattresses and maybe you felt a Tempur-pedic®. Brand? Do I think we have a better mattress? Hmmm. I would rather you answer this question, my answer is obvious… I think we have a different technology with some of our mattresses that tempurpedic does not. I can only say they have done a fine job of being the first to make this style bed. I am grateful they have spent millions of dollars per year to bring you the news about memory foam and create the demand. Don’t forget - you are the one who pays for that advertising when you buy their mattresses. I have no problem riding their coattails and just because a company created a product first - does not mean they are the best, industry after industry can validate that. Everyone is different and some people may not like one paticular type of mattress so try not to judge its value because of one or two bad reviews. Remember Statistics class? “People who are dissatisfied are more inclined to go vent (online) to find sites to post negatively.” I like Ruth’s Chris Steak house, but you don't see me going around online posting how much I like it, while if I hated it, I might want to express myself. My point is - we really don’t get to hear how many people love these mattresses. Consumer Reports says 75 percent of the people that buy them are satisfied. Don’t believe me? Try and find a 'real' used Tempur-pedic® on Craigslist. Not too many people sell them after they buy em’…
I will conclude with this, if this writing gives you anything, I hope its peace of mind, as a consumer and not having shopped for a mattress in many years it can be a little shocking - walking in and finding prices in the thousands. By now I hope you know why those retail mattress stores charge so much.
..........Because they can get that much....................................
Shop smart...
